COMMENTS DURING JUDGING:
Fall Preview: Thoughtfulness about the information and attention to the grid. Cover is strongest element.
Biggest and Best Busts: Need more formatting, detail. Content is great, will read the story, but the design doesn’t work with the iconic approach.
All in the Family: Voted on for consistency, confusion on editing.
Making waves: Local, a lot of effort was put into it. Well executed, but stuck to a format to a fault. Didn’t work well with everything. An ambitious design. Maintains look of the opener.
How to Rock the Weekend: Typography is loose. There’s a lot of cutout pictures that wasn’t appealing. In love with the idea more than the way it turned out.
In Transition: The sophistication is so detailed. It could be seen in a real publication. Opening spread is ‘nice and spare.’
Budget Beauty and Recycled Chic (same designer): Both could be seen in any magazine right now.
General Observations: Make or break were in the details. If you have a great idea, but don’t include a lot of details, it doesn’t work. Pay attention to the information. -Steve Dorsey
Kevin Goodbar: It’s interesting to see the transition from the opening to the inside and seeing if they stay consistent.
