2014 College News Design Contest Judges

With our contest just around the Corner , we wanted to give everyone something to look forward to.  So without further ado here are the 2014 College News Design Contest Judges.

Sara Quinn

Sara Quinn teaches visual journalism, leadership and multimedia. She leads Poynter’s college fellowship and its partnerships with universities. Sara directs Poynter’s EyeTrack research of newspaper, tablet and online reading habits, which helps journalists determine the best forms for storytelling. She also directs Poynter’s custom training with universities for students and educators.

 

 Carlos Ayulo

Santiago Carlos Ayulo is Assistant Managing Editor / Presentation for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. He has been at the Post-Dispatch for almost ten years. He has been the Sports Design Director and overall Design Director during his time with the P-D.

Previously he was lead sports designer for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and the Albuquerque Journal.

Santiago served as a judge for the 30th edition of the Society for News Design annual competition in 2009. He and his staff have won several SND awards for the P-D. Santiago has collaborated in several journalism workshops including SND annual workshop sites, University of Missouri, Eastern Illinois University, Southern Illinois University Carbondale, University of New Mexico and Ohio University.

 

Tim Parks

Tim Parks is Deputy Presentation and Planning Editor for the Omaha World-Herald. His work has been recognized by several design organizations, including multiple SND awards and medals. He was named 2009 Sports Designer of the Year by sportsdesigner.com.

Julie Elman

Julie M. Elman is an Associate Professor in the School of Visual Communication at Ohio University in Athens, where she teaches courses in publication design. Before moving back to Athens in the fall of 2005 to teach, Elman worked at The Virginian-Pilot in Norfolk, Va., for 10 years, where she spent most of her time designing the front page. Over the years, her pages won numerous awards from the Society for News Design. She is currently the Print Publications Director for SND. Elman first started out in the newspaper industry working as a photojournalist and a picture editor for daily and weekly newspapers in West Virginia, Tennessee and Massachusetts. In 2008, Elman designed the New York Times best-selling book The Rise of Barack Obama for Pete Souza, now chief White House photographer. She also played an instrumental role in updating the 7th edition of Tim Harrower’s The Newspaper Designer’s Handbook. Elman’s main focus now is working on and further developing the Fear Project, a visual chronicle of what scares people most.

Luke Seemann

Luke Seemann is Chicago magazine’s digital designer and developer. Previously he was a news editor and art director for the print edition of the Chicago Tribune. He is a graduate of Northwestern University.

 

Larry Buchanan

Larry Buchanan is a graphics editor at The New York Times. Before that he worked as a freelancer for The New Yorker, The Onion, ESPN and others. Before that, he went to Indiana University, adopted a dog, and lived in a log cabin. 

Deadline to enter the contest is March 24th. The contest will take place on April 14th and 15th.
